Fertility treatment

Natures differ, and needs with them. Hence the wise men of old did not lay down one measure for all  - Chuang Tse (4 B.C)

For some people the road to parenthood is not an easy one.  If conception does not occur as expected then life can become stressful and disheartening.  Fortunately many people are recognising the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine in treating a wide range of fertility problems.  Whether you are trying to conceive naturally, are embarking on the IVF process or have experienced previous miscarriage, acupuncture treatment has so much to offer.  A study published in the British Medical Journal in February 2008 concluded that when combined with IVF, 'acupuncture increased the odds of clinical pregnancy by 65%".

An in depth initial consultation will help us to put together an individual course of treatment  to support you on every step of your journey. This may also include manageable life style and nutritional advice to complement the acupuncture treatment . When you come to the initial consultation please bring along any information you have on test results.

Please call to discuss any questions or concerns you have or to ask me about other people's experiences.

Pregnancy support

For over 3000 years Traditional Chinese Medicine has promoted specialised treatment for women in pregnancy and postpartum recovery.  Value is placed on promoting preventative care to strengthen the mother and baby as well as dealing with the problems that occur during pregnancy.  The holistic nature of Chinese medicine means that treatments consider all aspects of 'mums to be' well being.

Treatment can used to relieve a variety of conditions including:

  • Anaemia
  • Anxiety
  • Backache and sciatica
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Oedema
  • Symphysis pubis pain
  • Threatened miscarriage
  • Tiredness and exhaustion

Acupuncture can also play an important role in assisting to reduce high blood pressure, especially if treatment is started early when hypertension is first noted.

There have been a number of studies carried out on the effectiveness of treatment when babies are not in the optimal position prior to birth. Treatment for breech babies is offered using moxibustion, a herb which is burned over a specific point known to promote babies movement.

Labour preparation treatments commence three to four weeks prior to your due date.  These treatments include preparation of the pelvis and cervix and help to reduce any anxious feelings that you may have.  Sessions are also offered to you and your birthing partner to learn acupressure points that can be used for pain relief and to help the labour progress.

Postnatal recovery is an important part of treatment in Chinese Medicine.  It recognises the importance of the mother's wellbeing and the time needed to rest and recuperate.  The term 'mother warming' is used as treatment is needed to warm and close the uterus and generally strengthen new mums.
